Feeding notes for Border Collies

No breed's calorie needs swing wider. A Border Collie doing real herding, agility or flyball work can need the "working dog" multiplier (2–3× resting requirement), while the same dog in a suburban living room needs a fraction of that. Recalculate honestly when the workload changes seasonally; the sport-dog portion carried into the off-season becomes fat by spring.

Portion numbers use the same RER/MER formulas as the main calculator. Full formula sources and limits: About & methodology.

The portion is a starting point. Feed it for 2–3 weeks, then check body condition: ribs easy to feel with light pressure, visible waist from above, belly tucked from the side. Adjust ±10% and re-check.

Frequently asked questions

How many cups of food should a Border Collie eat per day?

A typical spayed/neutered adult Border Collie (30–55 lb) needs roughly 794–1,250 kcal per day, which is about 2 to 3¼ cups of an average 375 kcal/cup dry food, split into two meals. Use the calculator with your dog's actual weight and your food's real kcal/cup for a precise number.

How much should a Border Collie puppy eat?

Puppies need far more per pound than adults: 3× resting energy before 4 months and 2× from 4–12 months, spread over 3–4 meals. Because the amount changes as they grow, weigh your puppy every week or two and re-run the puppy calculator with the current weight.
